6 Qualities of a Strategic UX Designer

As a Chicago UX design company, we have many talented designers. However, being a talented designer you also have to have certain qualities that make you the great designer you are. Listed below are 6 qualities that a strategic UX designer should have.
1. UX Leadership. In addition to normal leadership, UX leadership has to meet the rapid-changing company growth and culture. This change presents challenge to leadership further than just excellent design skills. Working at a UX company, I’ve learned that UX leadership must initiate motivation, make sure best practices are in place, provide UX guidance and confidence to team members, and most importantly builds morale throughout the entire UX team.

2. Technical Skills. This is an obvious one, having superior technical skills is a must for a strong UX designer. In the realm of technical skills, a UX designer has to understand basic computer programming principles, technologies, and tools, database principles, and a deep understanding of software and hardware development processes (coding, specification, testing). In addition, technical skills include the knowledge of new technologies and constraints, and hardware device knowledge including knowledge of manufacturing and mechanical engineering.
3. UX Research. If you want to be taken seriously as a strong UX designer, user experience design services require research skills that have to be at an expert level. Creating a mobile app or website is challenging and there’s a lot that goes into this process. UX research services designers make decisions that are not just chosen out of thin air, each idea is thought through, studied, and researched.

They have to be constantly looking out for new trends, brands designs, apps, ads, packaging, etc. Having an eye for good design is a skill that’s constantly in use and being sharpened as your career goes on.
5. Empathy. A strategic UX designer can put themselves in someone else’s shoes to better understand what they’re looking for and understanding their problems. If you’re empathetic to a person, you’re more willing to find a better solution to their problem. People will follow and respect you if you truly manifest what you believe in and embrace it.
6. Vision. Articulating a vision to the team is the most important thing a strategic UX designer can do to encourage people to do their absolute best work. UX designers must have the ability without over complicating anything, to describe a future idea for a product/service and be able to motivate the team behind this shared vision.
